Azmod is the older of the two shinigami brothers, who were actually once human, but because they lived in contempt of other humans, but technically free of sin, when they died, they became shinigami, and by decree of the shinigami God, only after they have reaped the souls of 10000 truly sinful corpses and reaped a total of 1000000 years will their souls be free. Azmod is only one year older simply by the fact that he was "born" a few seconds before midnight and Samuel was born a few seconds after.

Azmod is more violent and rash, wanting to serve his sentence as quickly as possible, but if he reaps a "pure" soul, he gets more years added to his sentence. Azmod also tends to toy with his victims before taking them.

Samuel is reluctant in reaping, and will only reap those he observes to be truly sinful. Inside Samuel's chest are the two skulls of Azmod and Samuel when they were human.

Because of their age, and also by becoming shinigami, they remember almost nothing of their human lives, although Samuel will occasionally have flashbacks of their human lives.
