edit: i took everyone's comments and critques and tried to improve it? dulled eyes a bit made lips redder and "fuller?" placed more detail in hair
i'm not sure how to make the shirt more realistic...

I couldn't sleep last night (I was finishing a final project... orz) even though I had two hours of sleep for Monday...
so I decided to do a digital painting of Yusei... I need to practice realistic coloring too... :/
When they first aired that episode that introduced the Planetary Gear (it uses the same characters as Yusei in Japanese) I was soooo confused because all I heard was that Yusei was named after a Yusei thingy so I was like lol wat, Yusei's that thing in my pencil sharpener? But then ta-da for wikipedia [link] (I kinda stole the image of the planetary gear from there too, but I shooped it a bit... orz) i'd love critique since im trying to work on my realistic painting skills =w=
OK, I love what you did with him, even though I have a question. Whats with the back-ground and what is he holding? He looks almost real. I'm not liking the color of the back-ground because, lets face it, It doesn't go well with the color he has on him.
The originality ,of course, earned three stars from me because you don't own the character itself and I love art that was expressed with a character owned or unowned in what the mind has in store for the art. This has little expression and thats what I look for in art. Whether it's love, depression, anger, hate, or even lust, it needs to be expressed.
The technique is amazing. You used the correct position of the shading and made it so life like, its impressive
Even though I am dazzled by this I still give it 4 stars on impact cause of the originality. T.W out
I'm not a digital artist myself, but let me take a shot at critiquing this.
First of all, I love the texture of his skin. It really fits the kind of sentimental feeling that I'm getting from this piece. However, his shirt and his hair seem out of place compared to the skin. The skin is a bit rough and sandy, while the hair and shirt are shinier and look more like the generic anime-style. You're getting there, but not quite. Try to tone down the colors a little to match the earthy, yellowy tones of the skin.
Also, another reason why the hair doesn't look that realistic might be because of how his hair is sticking out in the generic yugioh style (where they have IMPOSSIBLE hairstyles hahaha). This feature is hard to portray in realism, but I guess you'd have to let more individual strands flow out, and make the ends "sharper". For example, the few hair strands near his neck have dull ends, and hair doesn't really end like that.
Finally, you could make the hair and skin work together more by adding more definite shadows. Again, in the neck area, the hair strands there don't seem to be touching the skin at all because there aren't any signs of shadows that show the individual strands reflected on there. Same with the areas around his eyes--add more shadows that show the individual strands. You did this perfectly with the hair near his right (our left) eye, so just apply that to the rest of the picture.
I think that's mostly it. I'm not very good at realism or digital work myself so this is just an opinion based on instinct. If you have any more questions feel free to ask me. :] I hope this helps!
I'm not an artist, but let me try to give some feedback
Firstly, the overall picture is very striking. It hits both a compassionate chord in my heart and a chord that works other type of attractions on my body; either way both are very powerful, so well done there.
The details are well done; I like the work on his hair, because it looks so REAL and soft. His eyes are simply stunning and like he's half-way between sleep and the land of wake . . .
The only negative I find is that his fingers seem to be too tense - if they were a bit more relaxed and open around the device, I feel like it might work better; however, that's a tiny little nitpick that I only got after starring at the pic long enough.
